A breathtakingly beautiful race led through the Viennese wine landscape at the Nussberg
Panoramic views on Vienna, the Danube and the wineyards: It was a very special running experience at the third VCM Pop-up Run today, 6 September, at Vienna's Nussberg. Despite the change of weather to autumn, 200 amateur runners completed an impressive and challenging course through the wine and cultural landscape of the Nussberg in Vienna-Döbling, with the finish line being set amidst the vineyards at the Buschenschank Monte Nucum. A wonderful atmosphere at the finish and the "Nussberg Medal" in the form of a wine cork were the rewards.
Sebastian Harding (Adidas Runners Vienna) in 24:48 minutes and Christa Wallner (LV Marswiese) in 29:33 minutes were the premiere winners of this first time run in predominantly dry weather and 19°C.

Rain before the start provided wet ground and great fresh air.The race led over six kilometres from the Billa car park at Nussdorfer Platz to just below the Kahlenberg to the finish at the Buschenschank Monte Nucum. 278 metres uphill and 114 metres downhill had to be overcome. After two successful runs in July and August in the Prater, the Vienna City Marathon continued the VCM pop-up runs under Covid-19 conditions at a new location.
"Simply beautiful, relaxed atmosphere, great course"
"I went along for the mountains. The route and the area are simply beautiful. It is a change from running in the flat. The atmosphere was more relaxed than I've ever experienced in a race before," says Christa Wallner, the fastest woman of the day. Sebastian Harding, who had already finished second at the VCM Pop-up Run in August in the Prater, was now able to cheer for the victory. "It was a great race, super organised, super landscape. I started running again in the lockdown and thanks to the adidas Runners I stayed with it. Since then I have lost 13 kilos. I used to be very good at cross-country running in England, so I know hilly and demanding tracks very well".
"The connection between running and nature is getting stronger and stronger in leisure sports. Our run through the vineyards with a panoramic view of the big city added the pleasure factor. Time is still not easy for events, but in the small scale given to us by politics, we want to be active with events," says VCM Managing Director Gerhard Wehr.
The next small running event in this series will take place on Wednesday 16 September on the completely flat Prater Hauptallee over 5 km and - new - over 10 km. Registration is available.
