The 38th Vienna City Marathon (VCM) will take place on 12 September 2021.
All runners who have transferred their starting place from 2020 to the VCM 2021 have already been included in the starting list. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to them. They will receive a personal email with the direct link to their registration data.
For the majority of marathon transfers we have already sent this e-mail with the registration data. We will then gradually send out the half marathon and relay marathon transfers as well as to those runners who have agreed to start as supporters at the VCM 2021.
Once this process is complete we will open registration for the marathon, half marathon and relay marathon.
We plan to start registration in mid-March.
We are looking forward to seeing you running through Vienna at the next Vienna City Marathon.

We have already included your registration in the starting list for the VCM 2021. You will receive a personal email by mid-March with a direct link to your registration data to check and complete your details in the online registration system. In any case, re-select your expected finish time so that we can plan a safe and smooth start procedure.
If you have not received an email by mid-March, check your spam folder. If there is no email there either, please write to office@vienna-marathon.com.
You will receive a personal email by mid-March with a voucher code and a THANK YOU from us. This will allow you to register with a supporter contribution of 25%, 50% or 75% of the entry fee according to your choice.
If you were registered for the half marathon, you can use the voucher code to register for the marathon and vice versa. If you were registered for the relay marathon, the voucher code is only valid for this event. If you registered for a relay, you must enter the code four times - once for each member of the relay.
If you did not receive an email by mid-March, check your spam folder. If there is no email there either, please write to office@vienna-marathon.com.
Yes, you can use the direct link to your registration data, which you will receive in a personal email by mid-March, in the online registration system to postpone your start to 2022. Please do this as early as possible to facilitate our preparations. The deadline for postponement is 30 June 2021. The planning deadline for VCM 2022 is 24 April.
Yes, you can use the direct link to your registration data, which you will receive in a personal email by mid-March, in the online registration system to pass on your already transferred starting place to another person designated by you. The deadline for this is 15 August 2021.
The person who made the group registration will receive an email from us with voucher codes to register. Please contact the person who did your registration.
Registration for all runners who want to register anew and have not already transferred their starting place from the VCM 2020 will open by mid-March 2021. This concerns the marathon, half marathon and relay marathon events.
The entry fee for the individual events is staggered according to contingents.
Marathon € 80,- / 100,- / 110,-
Half marathon € 64,- / 74,- / 84,-
Relay marathon € 140,- / 170,- / 180,-
The amount of the entry fee remains unchanged compared to 2020. There is no chip rental fee because the timing will be done with the chip in the race number for the first time.
The total number of starting places in the individual events remains unchanged compared to 2020. However, as a large part of the VCM 2020 participants have decided to transfer to 2021, there are fewer starting places available for new registrations than in the past.
Yes, you can use the direct link to your registration data, which you will receive in your registration confirmation email, in the online registration system to pass on your starting place to another person designated by you. The deadline for this is 15 August 2021.
Use the direct link to your registration data that you will receive by email in your registration confirmation. This allows you to change your contact details in our new online registration system, transfer your registration to someone else or make additional orders, for example. Login data and links from 2020 or previous years will no longer work.
You would be able to transfer your start to 2022 or 2023 without further costs. Possible additional options depend on how consumer protection laws develop. Currently, Austria has a voucher scheme if an event has to be cancelled due to the pandemic. We would apply this voucher scheme or a possible new law that would be in place by then.
We are preparing these events and will inform you immediately when registration opens.
No. For the first time we will time the race with the chip in the start number. Wearing a start number with an integrated chip is a prerequisite for receiving a result. You cannot use your own chip. If you have rented a chip so far, this procedure is not necessary anymore and you save the chip rental.
At the moment there is no such insurance. We are in discussion with several providers and will announce when such an offer is available.
As a running event organiser, it is our responsibility to promote and protect health. We are preparing everything for a safe Vienna City Marathon in coordination with public authorities and medical experts based on a comprehensive Covid-19 prevention concept. The overall situation and regulations for September 2021 are understandably not yet known. We will actively inform about possible measures in a timely manner.
We made this decision in agreement with health experts and the responsible persons in the City of Vienna already in late summer 2020. This way there is more reliability and planning security, also for your preparation.
Normally the Vienna City Marathon scheduling has a lead time of five years, which means that we had already coordinated our planning dates for the VCM into 2025. We had to take the needs and availability of the big city of Vienna into account when finding the new dates. Vienna is an event city and there were many other events besides running events that pushed into autumn 2021. We are dependent on the availabilities of the city of Vienna. This includes first and foremost the Rathausplatz, the availability of an exhibition hall and probably the most important availability - that of a 42 km course. Vienna is constantly on the move and all major road construction measures have to be taken into account, also the underground construction and the corresponding building phases are decisive factors. The 12th of September was the only date that could be worked out together with those responsible in the city.
We are all in an extraordinary situation, and that also applies to the running autumn 2021. The running scene and the need for events are great. At the VCM pop-up runs, several participants told us that they started running during the lockdown and they now want to join competitions. We are convinced that there is room for many running events and that there is great anticipation for running events where people can run and celebrate together.
Discover one of the most impressive cultural marathon routes in the world.
The Vienna City Marathon leads to the most impressive modern and historical sights of Vienna. You start on Wagramer Straße in modern Vienna, close to the "UNO-City", the seat of the United Nations, and finishes in the city centre in front of the Burgtheater.
Immediately after the start, the participants cross the river Danube on the 864-meter Reichsbrücke bridge towards the city center. You pass the huge Ferris wheel and run on the completely flat "Prater Hauptallee" (main avenue) through the large, green park area of the Prater. This is exactly where Eliud Kipchoge ran in 1:59:40.2 hours for the marathon distance on 12 October 2019. He became the first person to run a marathon under two hours. A quarter of the VCM course is on Kipchoge's 1:59 course.
The race continues along the Danube Canal to the Vienna Ringstrasse, past the Vienna State Opera, the arts center Secession and the Naschmarkt, through the Wiental Valley to Schönbrunn Palace, Austria's most visited tourist attraction. Still before the half marathon distance, you run through Vienna's most famous shopping street, Mariahilfer Straße. You see many of the most impressive museums, the Parliament, the University of Vienna and the "Votivkirche" while running along one of the most impressive cultural marathon routes in the world. The magnificent Ringstraße boulevard is your home stretch. You will reach the finish line directly in front of the Burgtheater with a view of the City Hall.
The finishing line in front of the Burgtheater is also the heart of all running events on Saturday.
Here we provide an overview of the course maps of the Vienna City Marathon 2020. An update for 2021 will follow.
The VCM route is also available in detail on the digital city map of www.wien.gv.at.
The maximum altitude is 44,2 metres, the maximum gradient 0,4 %. The highest point of the course is at 45,7 metres above Vienna Zero (River Danube level) and is located at km 18,6 (Mariahilferstrasse / Kohlenhofgasse). The lowest point is at km 33 on Prater Hauptallee shortly before the Lusthaus at 1,3 m above Vienna Zero.
