It was an amazing weekend of running at the 36th Vienna City Marathon on 6th and 7th April 2019. So many dreams that have come true. An atmosphere like never before emerged along the course. We experienced big emotions from the first to the last finisher from 125 nations. Rathausplatz turned into a huge party area during and after the race. Perfect weather conditions and great performances by the international and Austrian top athletes contributed to the success of it. It's been a running event full of inspiration, starting with the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run, the kids and youth race, the Vienna 10K and the new Home Run in support of homeless people on Saturday and reaching its climax with the Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay Marathon on Sunday.
Here you find PHOTO GALLERIES of all races and side events of VCM 2019.
Congratulations to all finishers!
Thank you to all volunteers, partners and supporters!
We look forward to welcoming you back at the VCM 2020!
Nancy Kiprop produced the outstanding performance of the 36th Vienna City Marathon when she broke the women’s course record by over a minute and a half in running 2:22:12 and for good measure also became the first woman to win three VCM titles. Kiprop led a Kenyan clean sweep of the podium with all three women setting personal bests. Angela Tanui was runner-up in 2:25:37 and Maurine Chepkemoi third with 2:26:16. Nancy Kiprop became the first woman to win a hat-trick of VCM titles. Her race signified an improvement of more than a minute and a half over the previous course record of 2:23:47, set by the late Italian Maura Viceconte in 2000. Recovery came quickly after she crossed the finish line beside the famous Burgtheater. “I am already thinking of what to do with the prize money [A total of 21,000 Euro including course record bonus] to help my school project in Kenya, the 'Nancy Cletius Academy'. I would be very happy to return, I feel loved by the people in Vienna and they love my project.” Nancy Kiprop showed that outstanding performances can be produced not only inside the world famous Burgtheater but also on the finish line beside it.
Vincent Kipchumba of Kenya won with a personal best of 2:06:56 in the men’s race, improving his lifetime best by almost four minutes. He surged away in the closing stages from Switzerland’s Tadesse Abraham who finished second with 2:07:24. Uganda’s Solomon Mutai took third with 2:08:25, improving his best by just over one minute. The pace among the leading men’s group was hardly metronomic. It fluctuated throughout, suggesting an attack on the course record in the early stages when the expected big group went through 15k in 2:05:40 pace. Halfway in 1:03:21 seemed more realistic and racing became a cat and mouse affair. Tadesse Abraham went to the front but was joined by Vincent Kipchumba with first Kenyan Edwin Yator and then Uganda’s Solomon Mutai, the 2013 World Championship bronze medallist, coming into contention. Vincent Kipchuma steadily moved away from the Swiss record holder to win by almost half a minute. His 2:06:56 marked not only his first marathon win but an improvement of almost four minutes on his prior personal best of 2:10:32 in Dresden in 2016.
At the VCM's half marathon race almost 12,000 runners were elated to cross the finish line. Austrian Mario Bauernfeind was a clear winner and set a personal best of 1:06:40 hours. His adavantage on Ahmad Smour from Jordania (1:07:42) was more than a minute. Vincent Mckenna of Ireland (1:09:36) took third place. Hungarian runner Katalin Garami won the women's race by a huge margin in 1:17:02 ahead of Joelle Flück from Switzerland (1:23:13) and Delphine Thirifays from Belgium (1:24:17).
Going with the motto "four friends, one goal" the highly popular relay marathon took place. The team „Hotel Vienna“, consisting of Patrick Krammer, Julia Mayer, Roland Fencl and Christoph Sander, finished first 2:19:47. Fastest 'men only' teams were "Club Danube" with Wolfgang Wallner, Hartwig Fuchs, Reinhard Rathgeb and Alfred Sungi in 2:36:30 and „Stichwort Literatur" (David Satlauer, Matthias Hornek, Alexander Luger, Oliver Mick) in 2:36:36. Best women's team - Katharina Kreundl, Anna Strobl, Christina Mandlbauer und Vera Mair (Asics Frontrunner) - reached the finish line in 2:49:45.

Austrian top runners made Sunday, 7th April 2019 a truly special day. A new national record by Lemawork Ketema in 2:10:44 plus the direct qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 was a highlight performance, but did not remain the only one. Valentin Pfeil (2:12:55) and Eva Wutti (2:34:12) set personal bests and achieved world championships qualifying marks. Peter Herzog showed a solid race in 2:16:16 which underlines a remarkable strength in depth in the Austrian marathon running scene.
Promising split times during the race accelerated the pulse by fans and observers. One could hardly believe what was going to happen. The jubilant finish of Lemawork Ketema in a national record time was the first bang on this day in terms of Austrian running. Congratulations have just started when Valentin Pfeil stormed down the finishing straight. In 2:12:55 he improved his previous best by almost two minutes and became the fifth fastest Austrian marathon runner of all time. Peter Herzog underlined his fighting spirit to clock 2:16:16. Even if he ran faster than a year ago he performed below his expectations.
Full applause has to go to Eva Wutti. The former triathlete still has to be considered as a newcomer in the marathon scene. Here preparation suffered a shortcut due to a virus infection in late 2018. With a new personal best of 2:34:12 she superbly proved her capabilities and showed the best possible result at her current status. The qualification for the World Championships in Doha as well as an upgrade in the elite squad of Austrian Athletics Federation boosts her motivation for further improvements. The Olympic Marathon in Tokyo 2020 is clearly on her mind.
Thousands of spectators along the course, applause ringing around the grandstands on the home straight to the finish and great sporting performances – the Saturday events of the 2019 Vienna City Marathon produced wonderful images, rich in emotion, and a special sense of togetherness. Particicpants in the Vienna 10K, the VCM Kids Race (2K), the VCM Youth Race (5K), the new Home Run (5K) for charity purposes and the Coca-Coca Cola Inclusion Run provided a fantastic opening of the running stage in Vienna.
A strong message: The first running event of the Vienna City Marathon weekend inspired runners and visitors alike. The Coca-Cola Inclusion Run motivated people with all kinds of capabilities to run and walk the final 800 metres of the marathon course, from the 'Heldentor' to the Burgtheater. Among them was the official starter of the marathon on Sunday, Maria Prähofer, who has the rare metabolic disorder of MPS and usually isn't able to run - but she did it for this occasion.
At the Vienna 10K Stefan Schmid relishes the atmosphere of a home win. Austria’s promising steeplechaser celebrated victory in his 10k debut on the road in 31:07 minutes, savouring the atmosphere along the course in his home town. Natasha Cockram from Wales ran a personal best of 34:34 minute and gave her prospects in the London Marathon an ideal boost.
The VCM Youth Race was a five kilometre event and ended in two dominant performances to the finish line. The boys’ title went to Bernhard Neumann who ran 16:09. The girls’ title was won by Cordula Lassacher who improved by 70 seconds from 2018 to run 18:11
The winners in the VCM Kids Race were Christoph Großsteiner of Austria who ran 7:44 for the two kilometres and Ajda Slapsak from Slovenia who covered the distance in 8:25.
For the first time the Home Run over five kilometres took place. This charity race raised awareness and money for the help for homeless people in Vienna.
Running is your sport for life. Everybody, who ever took part in a running event, knows this quite well. As time goes by, success isn’t measured in personal bestes anymore. Performances, however, of some of best masters runners are simply breathtaking. This is why we specially want to congratulate the age group winners of VCM 2019! As a acknowledgement we produced a roll of honour. Each winner receives a personally engraved medal of the Vienna City Marathon.
The broad international range of age group winners in Vienna is quite remarkable. Champions come from 13 different countries.
We are happy that the Vienna City Marathon is part of the Wanda Age Group World Rankings of Abbott World Marathon Majors from 2020 onwards. At the next Vienna City Marathon on 19th April 2020 every single age group runner will collect points for this world wide ranking list and the qualification for the Age Group World Championships 2021.
Running and helping is a story of success at the Vienna City Marathon. Participants at one of the races, family and friends raised more than 170,000 Euros for various projects and social organisations. Over the past four years a total of 670,000 Euros were donated to charity organisations by participants of the Vienna City Marathon.
These organisations were part of VCM Charity 2019:
• MPS: Laufen für die, die es selbst nicht können - für Kinder mit Mukopolysaccharidosen
• Debra Österreich : Linderung und Heilung für "Schmetterlingskinder"
• Home Run: Ich laufe - Du spendest - Wir helfen!

The Vienna City Marathon also provided the platform for the support of "Red Noses International". Relay runners and the C&A Foundation raised 120,000 Euros for the project "Intensive Smile" in Austria and six other countries.
We look forward to welcoming you at the 37th Vienna City Marathon on 18th und 19th April 2020!
