Discover the highlights of Vienna on the run


 

From the start at the Reichsbrücke to the finish on the Ringstrasse between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz: the Vienna City Marathon takes you to the most impressive highlights of Vienna. A centrepiece is the Prater Hauptallee - World Heritage Site of athletics and "venue of the first marathon under two hours by Eliud Kipchoge.  

The marathon, the Wiener Städtische Half Marathon and the Vienna 5K are officially measured by the AIMS and are part of the World Athletics Global Calendar.  
 


  
  

Starting Blocks

The starting area is divided into six blocks with start times from 9:00 AM to 9:25 AM. 

  • Position yourself in the starting block assigned to you.
  • You can find your starting block printed on your race number.
  • Starting in the wrong block may lead to disqualification.
  • The end of the starting time window for the last block is precisely set at 09:35 AM.
  • Participants starting after 09:35 AM will not be included in the rankings.

Wardrobe Transport

If you can organize your wardrobe transport yourself, you can avoid waiting times.

wardrobe drop-off from 7:15 AM at the truck in the rear start area (near U1 station "Alte Donau") that is marked with your race number. The latest drop-off for the 1st start block is 8:15 AM, and for the last start block, 8:35 AM, because the trucks need to depart on time.

Old clothes used for keeping warm can be left at the start. They will be collected by MA 48, recycled if possible, and reused or processed into material.

Use only the VCM wardrobe bag that you received at the race number pick-up. No bags, suitcases, trolleys, backpacks, or similar. Attach the wardrobe transport sticker (identical to your race number), found in your race materials, to the designated area on the wardrobe bag. Please note that without this sticker, your belongings cannot be transported. Do not pack valuables or fragile items. The organizer is not liable for damage or loss. Your clothing will be transported to the finish area after the race starts.

If you have pre-booked this service: from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM in a truck opposite the University of Vienna in the starting area. The truck will remain in the same location. Pick up after the race until 7:30 PM.
 

Pacemakers

We will provide teams of 2-3 pacemakers for these marathon target times:

3:30 | 3:45 | 4:00 | 4:15 | 4:30 hours

The pacemakers are identified by backpacks & beach flags. They are supposed to run at a steady pace slightly below the target time.

The Vienna City Marathon is an attractive and varied city course on which you can run fast times. The difference between the lowest and highest point of the course is only 44 metres.

Field Separation Marathon | Half Marathon at KM 20.3

The marathon and the Wiener Städtische Half Marathon run on the same course. The separation of the fields takes place at KM 20.3 and is marked with announcement signs. 

  • Marathon and relay marathon runners: line up on the left and continue straight ahead - through the blue air arch of "Erste Bank".
  • Half marathon runners: line up on the right, turn right into Bellariastraße - through the red air arch of "Wiener Städtische".

Switching from Marathon to Half Marathon

Switching from the marathon to the half marathon distance is possible without prior notification during the race. If you, as a registered marathon runner, turn into the half marathon finish, you will be listed in the half marathon results.

Intermediate Times / Kilometer Markers

Official intermediate times are measured every five kilometers and at the half marathon. The kilometer markers are mostly positioned on the right side of the course, approximately 2 meters high.

42 km well fuelled - the VCM aid stations at a glance

Here you will find a complete overview of all the refreshment points, water stations and refreshment points that will be available at the start, along the course and at the finish. Please note that the positions listed here may change slightly due to traffic conditions.  

  • 400-450 people will be working for you at the refreshment stations.
  • 50,000 litres of Powerade,
  • 5,000 litres of Coca-Cola,
  • 60,000 bananas and
  • 35,000 apples are prepared and handed out.

Water for the refreshment stations along the route is obtained exclusively from hydrants (high spring water) in order to reduce plastic waste from drinks bottles.

First Aid

The Red Cross medical team is ready along the course to provide first aid services. If you see another runner experiencing difficulties, please inform the nearest Red Cross team or have a spectator call the emergency number 144.

The finish area of the Vienna City Marathon is located in the heart of the city at one of Vienna's most beautiful places, directly on the Ringstraße between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz.

Rain ponchos

In the event of low temperatures, we offer rain ponchos for marathon and half marathon runners at the finish line, if desired. You can reuse the poncho several times for different purposes. Please take it home with you. If you have no use for it, dispose of it in the yellow bin (plastics recycling) there.

  • BeKind muesli bar
  • Sebamed shower gel

The refreshments are provided in a bag made from biodegradable material (PLA), produced from renewable resources such as sugarcane or corn and free from petroleum.

Wardrobe Return

The wardrobe return is located on Ebendorferstraße. The return of the clothing bag is only possible upon presentation of the race number. Unclaimed clothing bags will be taken to the organization office and kept there for about three weeks. The organizer is not liable for any loss or damage.

Shower Facilities

We offer individual shower cabins in containers. These will be set up at Rathausplatz / corner of Felderstraße on the side of the Rathaus. Please understand if there are waiting times.
