On 19 April 2020, the Vienna City Marathon (VCM) will once again moves a whole city. With 40,000 participants and one million fans, the VCM is the largest sporting event in Austria. Runners from all over the world follow in the footsteps of Eliud Kipchoges, who was the first human to run a marathon under two hours here.
The Vienna City Marathon will take place for the 37th time on 19 April 2020: Austria's largest sporting event has been held annually since 1984 and mobilizes over 40,000 runners. Participants from all over Austria and around 125 nations are the main protagonists. World stars of the running sport inspire the fans year after year. A total of one million people follow the events directly at the track, in live TV broadcasts and via digital media.
One city. One myth. One marathon.
Like no other marathon, the VCM combines the cultural and tourist images of a cosmopolitan city with a modern running experience. The course leads to many historical and modern sights of Vienna. The finish line is located directly on the historic Ringstrasse between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz.
The heart of the VCM is the legendary Prater Hauptallee: a 4.3 km long, completely straight course in the Vienna Prater. Here, marathon star and Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge was the first human to run a marathon under two hours on October 12, 2019 as part of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. He has thus written himself into the history books and into our hearts and has given Vienna a special place in the history of marathons. The VCM team was the local organizer of this magnificent event.
A variety of positive effects
Thanks to its positive spirit, the VCM has developed into a platform for social and charity projects. Within the framework of "Run for Charity", participants commit themselves to a personal affair of the heart. Since 2015 alone, VCM Charity has raised over 725,000 euros in donations.
The VCM is an important economic factor for tourism and trade: the event generates 127,000 booked overnight stays in Vienna and generates tourism expenditure of 25 million euros. The runners cover around 750,000 kilometres on the race weekend alone. This makes the VCM the largest sports initiative in Austria. The event offers a platform for anchoring sport and health in corporate cultures and for technological innovations. The Vienna City Marathon has a leading role in motivating people to actively take up running and pursue their health and fitness goals. The VCM offers free training sessions and preparation races for its participants and supports the Vienna running community. The VCM is the Austrian partner of The Daily Mile, a globally successful movement initiative for school children.
A Star moves the city.
The VCM carries the World Athletics Road Race Gold Label. This is awarded for the highest sporting and organisational standards. Getu Feleke from Ethiopia (2:05:41 hours) and the Kenyan Nancy Kiprop (2:22:12 hours) hold the marathon course records.
The event offers runs and events for the whole family over two days. On Sunday, in addition to the marathon over the classic distance of 42.195 kilometers, a half-marathon and a relay marathon for teams of four will take place simultaneously. The day before, 18 April 2020, runs over 5 and 10 km (Vienna 5K and Vienna 10K), the VCM Kids Race and the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run will be staged. Side events such as the VCM Carbo Loading Party and the VCM Expo Vienna Sports World in the Marx Halle expand the range of events for visitors.
