On 12 October 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran into the history books and our hearts with the world's first marathon under two hours. The Vienna City Marathon, as local organiser, together with an international team of experts, has implemented this race, the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. That is why we are celebrating this spirit for all running enthusiasts.
Look forward to the great atmosphere in the Prater Hauptallee. You run on a 2km shuttle course and are always surrounded by other runners and fans. At the starting point, which you will pass every two kilometres, you will see and hear the original video of Eliud Kipchoge's run at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. Goosebumps!
Take the VCM Tribute to Eliud as an opportunity to start your preparation for the 40th Vienna City Marathon on 23 April 2023. Whether it's a marathon, half marathon or relay, let yourself be inspired.
We want our events to be motivating and to spread the joy of running - there is an infinite amount of it.
For runners who are already registered for the VCM 2023, we have a contingent of free starting places. >> More
If two hours of running is too much for you or doesn't fit into your plans, split the challenge and do it in a team of two. Find a friend for a relay.
You can take shifts as you like. Who runs which distances and how often you change is entirely up to you.
Each team receives a start number with an RFID chip and a start number band. The start number must be handed over each time.
The INEOS 1:59 Challenge inspired millions of people and continues to do so today. Vienna will forever be associated with the first marathon under two hours. We are proud to have made an important contribution to this and want to carry on the spirit of Eliud Kipchoge's run.
The venue of the race, the Prater Hauptallee, was awarded the World Athletics Heritage Plaque on the initiative of the Vienna City Marathon. There were many reasons for this, an important one being Kipchoge's run.
On 12 October 2021, display boards were unveiled at the finish of the run telling the story of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. On the same day, the VCM team held the Beat Eliud! running challenge on Prater Hauptallee as a tribute to Eliud. Anyone and everyone could try to run 100 metres in 17.02 seconds or faster, beating Eliud Kipchoge's marathon record pace over a short distance.
On 12 October 2020 we celebrated the first VCM Tribute to Eliud, the first anniversary of Eliud Kipchoge's groundbreaking marathon.
In the Prater Hauptallee, 200 runners did their best under Covid-19 conditions for 1:59:40.2 hours, trying to run as far as possible in that time. The participants thus supported the running & health initiative The Daily Mile Austria in schools and kindergartens.
The Vienna City Marathon team received the pma Excellence Award 2020 from Projekt Management Austria, Austria's largest PM association, for the successful realisation of the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
