VCM Tribute to Eliud

On 12 October 2023, we celebrated the fourth anniversary of Eliud's fantastic sub-two-hour marathon.

352.6 metres in 1 minute: We invited people to the VCM Tribute to Eliud - Community Run and took on the challenge, the INEOS 1:59 Pace Challenge. Many interested people from the Viennese running community and the VCM team sprinted this distance in a great atmosphere and fine weather. On the Prater Hauptallee, exactly where he ran his way into the history books and our hearts. Coaches from Sportordination, adidas Runners Vienna and Parkrun in Donaupark led the joint warm-up in several groups. Then it was off to the start over 352.6 metres - breathlessly through the Nacht-Allee. This is the distance that Eliud Kipchoge covered every single minute of his marathon in under two hours. Everyone could feel for themselves how incredibly fast this pace is.

Eliud goodies & VCM starting places

We raffled off VCM starting places and INEOS 1:59 Challenge T-shirts in a raffle on site. The main prize was a running shirt signed by Eliud Kipchoge! The INEOS 1:59 Pace Challenge kicked off on 27 September - with Eliud Kipchoge! The two-time Olympic champion returned to the Prater Hauptallee on the initiative of the VCM and celebrated an inspiring morning together with the running community: school classes taking part in the exercise initiative "The Daily Mile", 159 registered amateur runners, guests of honour, media representatives and numerous fans came to the Prater Hauptallee in bright late summer weather. Vienna's Mayor Michael Ludwig honoured Eliud Kipchoge with the "Golden City Hall Man".

Home of 1:59

On 12 October 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran into the history books and our hearts in the world's first marathon under two hours. As the local organiser, the Vienna City Marathon worked with an international team of experts to create this race, the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. That is why we are celebrating this spirit with you and all running enthusiasts.
