#TogetherWeRun #VCM2021
In agreement with health experts and the responsible persons in the city of Vienna, we are convinced that we will have an improved overall situation for Covid-19 on September 12th and be able to organise a big marathon in Vienna. We want to hold an event that offers a thrilling experience and inspires the participants and spectators as we know it from 2019 and the years before. Moving the event from April to the second half of 2021 is the more honest answer to the difficult situation and brings more reliability and planning security, also for your preparations.
Registration for the marathon, half-marathon and relay marathon will open at the beginning of 2021.
Your transfer will of course remain valid.
The postponement has no effect on a voucher. If you have chosen this option, we will send you a voucher for the corresponding amount.
We want to hold running events on the way to the VCM 2021, as far as the legal regulations allow. If circumstances permit, 18 April 2021 is also a good option for an event.
If you have already transferred your starting place to 2021 and cannot start on 12 September 2021, there is the possibility to transfer your starting place to the Vienna City Marathon 2022. The planning date is 24 April 2022. Please send an e-mail to office@vienna-marathon.com for this purpose.
If you have already transferred your starting place to 2022 and now want to start at the VCM on 12 September 2021, there is the possibility to change. Please send an e-mail to office@vienna-marathon.com for this purpose.
If you do not want to take advantage of the possibility of a free transfer to 2021 or 2022, we can offer you a voucher based on the valid Austrian legal situation.
This procedure according to the "Kunst-, Kultur- und Sportsicherungsgesetz" (KuKuSpoSiG) provides for the issue of a voucher of up to 70 Euros and, if necessary, payment of any balance exceeding this amount. Find here the text of the law. Please understand that this link ia available in German language only.
This law, adopted by the Austrian Parliament, applies to art, cultural and sports events that had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
If you choose the option "KuKuSpoSiG", you will be issued with a voucher worth the entry fee paid, up to a maximum of 70 Euros. If your entry fee was higher, you will be refunded the difference to the 70 Euros. Example: You paid 74 euros for a half marathon start in the second contingent. You would then receive a voucher for 70 euros and a refund of 4 euros. For a relay race, the applicant would receive a voucher for 70 euros, the rest would be paid out to the applicant.
You can use this voucher until 31.12.2022 for a registration at one of the Vienna City Marathon events. You would have to pay the possibly missing amount on the current entry fee. The voucher is transferable to another person. After 31.12.2022 an unredeemed voucher will be paid out on demand.
Please note: This voucher regulation only concerns the entry fee. The chip rent, if you have paid it, is not affected. This will be transferred back 100 percent. Also the ordered additional services are not affected by this regulation. We will also refund or provide these at 100 percent.
If you choose the processing according to KuKuSpoSiG, please write to us at office@vienna-marathon.com with your bank details, so that we can carry out this reversal.
Normally the Vienna City Marathon schedule has a lead time of five years, which means that we had already coordinated our planning dates for the VCM until 2025. When setting new date, we had to take into account the needs and availability of the city of Vienna. Vienna is an event city, and there are many other activities besides running events that are now pushing into autumn 2021. We are dependent on the availability of the city and the infrastructure of Vienna. This includes first and foremost the Rathausplatz at the finish area, the availability of an exhibition hall and probably the most important availability - that of a 42 km route. Vienna is constantly on the move and all major road construction measures must be taken into account, including underground railway construction and the corresponding construction phases. The 12th September was the only date that could be worked out together with those responsible in the city.
We are all in an extraordinary situation, and this also applies to the running autumn of 2021. It is expected - hopefully - that there will be more runs in one year than usual, because in Austria and internationally probably more marathons will be moved to autumn. So far there have been several runs and triathlons on many weekends in spring and autumn, including marathons on consecutive weekends in Austria. Everybody could live well with it. The running scene and the need for events are huge.During the VCM pop-up runs several participants told us that they started running during the lockdown in spring and that they now want to participate in competitions. We are convinced that there is room for many running events and that the anticipation of running events where people can run and celebrate together is great.
(02/07/2020) - The reversal of the Vienna City Marathon (VCM) 2020 has been largely completed. Thanks to everyone for their feedback! The possibility to choose between the different options in the online form is now terminated.
The corresponding refunds of entry fees and additional services have already been made and should arrive on your account in the near future, if not already done so.
If there is still the wish to reverse the transaction according to the "Kunst-, Kultur- und Sport-Sicherungsgesetz (KuKuSpoSiG)", please contact us at office@vienna-marathon.com.
This law, which is valid for events in Austria that have been cancelled due to Covid-19, provides for the issue of a voucher up to a maximum amount of 70,- Euro. Any entry fee exceeding this amount would be refunded. The vouchers are valid until 31 December 2022. After this period the value of the voucher can be paid out on demand. Here is the link to the corresponding law. We are sorry, that this legal document is available in German only.
All ordered products - T-shirts, T-shirts with individual printing and BibBits (magnetic race number holders) - were brought to Austrian Post for shipping. Some of the items have already reached their recipients, the rest are on their way. Please note that there are still delivery restrictions to several countries.
We wish everyone a nice and sporty running summer. We are already looking forward to welcoming you at the next Vienna City Marathon on April 18, 2021 or one of our events on the way there.

With kind regardsIt was planned that the runners would pick up their ordered T-shirts. Namely at the VCM Expo "Vienna Sports World" on Friday and Saturday before the Vienna City Marathon. Due to the cancellation everything turned around. Not the runners came to the T-shirts, the T-shirts had to come to the runners.
As there were thousands of items to be shipped to many different countries, this project proved to be a great challenge. More than two thousand runners also ordered individual additional prints, which should have been applied during the Vienna Sports World. The producer for these prints comes from Germany and was unable to travel to Austria for a long time due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Several detailed agreements with Austrian Postal Service were necessary in preparation. It had become June, until T-shirts, printing machines and the person who knew how to handle it could get together in Vienna. Now the implementation was ready to start. Envelopes were produced and addressed. The T-shirts were personally printed according to the runners' wishes. Each envelope contained a shirt in the right size, a VCM flyer and, for most countries, a discount voucher by sports retailer Hervis. Sorted by postal code and tied up in packets of ten, we packed all envelopes into boxes and brought them on several pallets to the post. The ordered VCM BibBits (magnetic start number holders) were also sent to the runners.
Many thanks to all helpers and to the Austrian Postal Service.Run Vienna. Run the Marathon Star. Plan your race and get all the details about the VCM course here.
The Vienna City Marathon leads to the most impressive modern and historical sights of Vienna. It starts on Wagramer Straße in modern Vienna, close to the "UNO-City", the seat of the United Nations, and finishes in the city centre in front of the Burgtheater.
Immediately after the start, the participants cross the Danube on the 864-meter Reichsbrücke bridge towards the historic city center. The run leads past the Ferris wheel into the completely flat and straight main avenue and through the large, green park area of the Prater. This is exactly where running star Eliud Kipchoge 2019 ran in 1:59:40.2 hours as the first person to run a marathon under two hours. A quarter of the VCM course is on Kipchoge's 1:59 course.
The race continues along the Danube Canal to the Vienna Ringstrasse, past the famous opera, the Secession and the Naschmarkt, through the Wiental Valley to Schönbrunn Palace, Austria's most visited tourist attraction. The participants walk through Vienna's most famous shopping street, the Mariahilfer Straße. Many of Vienna's most impressive buildings such as the Votivkirche, the many museums, the University of Vienna and the Parliament are located directly along the route. The splendid boulevard Ringstraße becomes the home stretch for one of the most impressive cultural marathon routes in the world. Participants in all competitions will reach the finish line directly in front of the Burgtheater with a view of the city hall.
The finishing line in front of the Burgtheater is also the heart of all running events on Saturday. The VCM Kids Race and the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run take place entirely on the Ringstrasse. Vienna 10K and Vienna 5K start near the Expo "Vienna Sports World" and lead through the Prater and Landstraßer Hauptstraße towards the finish.
Here we provide an overview of the course maps of the Vienna City Marathon 2020. Update will follow.
The VCM route is also available in detail on the digital city map of www.wien.gv.at.
The maximum altitude is 44,2 metres, the maximum gradient 0,4 %. The highest point of the course is at 45,7 metres above Vienna Zero (River Danube level) and is located at km 18,6 (Mariahilferstrasse / Kohlenhofgasse). The lowest point is at km 33 on Prater Hauptallee shortly before the Lusthaus at 1,3 m above Vienna Zero.
