My Marathon History, 490 BC, as it really was!

VCM Raffle: Tell us the true story about the origins of marathon running!

The origin of the modern marathon actually goes back to a messenger who, in 490 BC, brought the news of the victory of the Greek over the Persians from Marathon to Athens. In 2010 we celebrate the biggest jubilee existing in sports: 2500 years of the Marathon myth!

Obviously, the whole story has not been discovered yet. Our research shows that Phillippedes was not alone! We found out that YOU were a soldier in the Greek army which fought the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. After the battle you ran with your friend Phillippedes to Athens, bringing news of the Greeks’ victory. On arriving in Athens Phillippedes called out: “Rejoice, we are victorious!” before he collapsed and died in the arms of his fellow citizens.

We are delighted that after such a long period of silence you are now prepared to speak about this legendary event so as to help historians clear up the many unanswered questions to which Phillippedes is not longer in a position to respond.
