VCM at the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert!

Scenes of marathon running being presented at the largest classical music event in the world

The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2010 was conducted for the second time by the French conductor Georges Prêtre. Within Austria about 1.1 million viewers began the first day of the New Year with the ORF broadcast. Worldwide the television broadcast of the concert was viewed by approximately 45 million people in over 70 different countries. Due to the television and radio broadcasts, the New Year's Concert is in terms of its international coverage the largest classical music event in the world.

Marathon running & cultural highlights
In between the compositions by “waltz king” Johann Strauß, Otto Nicolai and Jacques Offenbach a video presented the cultural and tourist highlights of Vienna. For the first time running scenes of the Vienna City Marathon were shown in this context. Pictures of runners crossing the river Danube were embedded in views of St. Stephens Cathedral, the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Vienna Opera Ball or the Life Ball.

Marathon in the World Capital of Music
The Vienna City Marathon, Austria’s largest running event, and classical culture weld together to form a singular experience. In co-operation with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra special concerts were arranged exclusively for the participants of the Vienna City Marathon. Additionally, along parts of the course the runners are swept forwards by the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss.
