The Vienna City Marathon is the Marathon that takes place in the World-capital of Classical Music. Under the motto "Run Vienna - Enjoy Classic", sport und classical culture blend to make a singular running experience. Music plays a huge role over the marathon weekend; also during parts of the course, runners will be spurred on by classical sounds.

get2gether - The coffee and pancake party

Classical music to accompany your carbo-loading:  The traditional “Kaiserschmarrn-Party” in the magnificent ballroom of the Vienna Town Hall sets the stylish ambience for live classical music.  The Pancake Party is the social checkpoint for runners and those accompanying them.  Tickets for the Pancake Party can be ordered on the [online registration at www.sportpayment.com] and are also available locally in the town hall.

Start - On the Beautiful Blue Danube

Picture the scene directly before the marathon: a mixture of concentration and respect hangs in the air.  Nobody needs to be adrenalised or roused with loud noise.  With the “Greeting Ceremony“, amidst music from Beethoven’s Ode to Joy all participating nations will be formally welcomed.  At the start, according to tradition, the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss will be played.

Musical mile along Schüttelstrasse - a modern marathon

Between Franzens-bridge and Lukschgasse there will be a “melodious mile” of contemporary music.  Along a 2km section, which will be run through three times, “Radio Vienna“ will take responsibility for the “melody”.

Classical Mile along Ringstrasse - Schwarzenberg Square

The section in the city centre, between Weiskirchnerstraße and Schwarzenberg Square, will be showered with classical music throughout.  On the broad
Ringstraße (Schubertring and Parkring), all participants will receive a classical music treat between kilometres 10 and 11.  Shortly before the end of the marathon, between kilometres 40 and 41, this passage will be played again, and the classical sounds should motivate all runners for the approach to the finish line.
Also a must for spectators.

Prater-Power

After 30 kilometres you run through the green lung of Vienna, into the Viennese Prater. At the end of Prater Avenue, by the Lusthaus, modern music will establish the mood and renew your motivation.

At the Finish

At the approach to the finish line in Heroes’ Square (“Heldenplatz“), the triumphant finisher will be received by Richard Strauss’ "Also sprach Zarathustra".  In terms of music and presentation, it is here that the atmosphere reaches a climax, for several hours after the completion of the race.
